Vince Ross, Executive Director of the Fallbrook Tourism Project, opened the August meeting with a recap of his visit, along with Mike Weber to Everett,  www.everettwa.org, and Snohomish, Washington, www.snohomish.org

Vince & Mike met with Lanie McMullin, one of the original tourism consultants hired by Fallbrook, were introduced to several of her colleagues, and reviewed arts programs throughout the Seattle area

They also met with the Educational Director of the Pratt Fine Arts Center, a component of the city of Seattle, and were treated to a tour of facility

Representatives from the Pratt were in Fallbrook on August
17th & 18th, to discuss the Village's arts education programs.
On the Tourism Project wish list is to hire this consultant
to help develop Fallbrook's arts education programs

Vince noted the size of the Pratt, its teaching spaces, and classes
are relatively small, as here at the Art Studios of Fallbrook

Vince, Mike, and Brigitte Schlemmer then ventured south to
The Crucible to partake in the organization's Fire Arts fundraising event

The Crucible, a a non-profit arts foundry, teaches 100 classes
and has developed creative funding to expand to their present size. Arrangements are being made for an autumn visit to Fallbrook
by Crucible founder, Michael Sturtz

Jerri Patchett discussed plans underway for trees and planters beautification efforts at the north end of Main Street,
where it intersects with Mission Road. She  related that
business owners in the neighborhood are discussing among themselves plans to dress-up this entrance to downtown Fallbrook

Jerri also reported the South Mission Road widening project
is progressing ahead of schedule

[ Chamber of Commerce  ]

Budd Sutliff, current President-elect of the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce, presented this month's Chamber report

Budd noted the Chamber Board voted to transfer funds from
Chamber tourism projects to the new Fallbrook Area Visitors Bureau.
Budd sits on the Steering Committee selecting the Visitors Bureau's Board of Directors, and related that the Fallbrook Village Association
is also funding half of the Bureau's startup costs

[ Heart Of The Village  ]

Pat Sutliff, told that the Merchants Association in in the process of becoming a formal organization. It is felt this development, with the attendant fundraising capabilities, will not only make the Merchants a stronger force, but help the Merchants in partnering with other Village groups working on downtown revitalization

Among changes underway in the Heart of the Village:

  • Lander's Irish pub is coming to the
    former Packing House restaurant site

  • The facade of the Mission Theater is being upgraded

  • The Book Nook is moving to the former location of Lizzie's

  • Chattels is opening a 2nd store,
next door to the Art Center

Pat ended with a description of
A Few Of Our Favorite Things plans (underway)
to subdivide into 3 shops

[ Seeing The Big Picture  ]

Mike Weber, Chair of the Big Picture Committee,
reported he is working with Marlene Rantanen on re-designing the Art Studios and the Foundry. The goal for the facility - in addition to expanding on the arts education offerings and integrating the Foundry into the grounds - is to create a site that welcomes the public with viewings of art production, a gallery displaying works produced in the classes,
plus picnic grounds

The artist live / work project at the corner of Alvarado and Ivy streets continues to progress. Mike stated it is a learning process for both the Tourism Project and the County. Creating County planning parameters describing such structures is considered a worthwhile effort that
will help with future initiatives

[ Fallbrook Area Visitors Bureau  ]

Don McDougal, Chair of the Visitors Bureau Steering Committee, expanded on Budd Sutliff's report about the preliminary steps to form the Bureau. The Committee is working to incorporate the Bureau as a
501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and develop by-laws.
The Board will then use contributed funds
from the Village Association and Chamber of Commerce
to hire an Executive Director for the organization

The Committee capped-off their meeting by appointing the following Executive Committee to lead the Visitors Bureau Board of Directors
(in parenthesis is the Fallbrook sector each officer represents):

President - Don McDougal (Weddings & Special Events)
Vice President - Julie Reeder (Chamber of Commerce)
Treasurer - Scott Rowland (Merchants Association)
Secretary - Karon Cartwright (Hospitality)

Don wrapped up his account by reporting Supervisor Bill Horn's office
- http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/cnty/bos/sup5/ -
looks positively on the collaborative efforts between
the Village Association and Chamber of Commerce
in creating the Visitors Bureau

[ Arts Council  ]

Mary Perhacs, representing the Arts Council, recounted her conversation with the Supervisor's office regarding the celebration throughout San Diego county of Mozart's 250th birthday. Fallbrook has been chosen to play an active role in the festivities, with collaboration between the Village Association, the Fallbrook Music Society,
and San Diego's Mainly Mozart. This will include events in the schools,
at the Art Center, and in the Heart of the Village

[ Art Of The Festivals  ]

Michael Cartwright, Art Of The Flower festival chair,
reported progress continues to be made on Fallbrook's 2nd
"The Art Of" festival, Art Of The Book - The Festival.
The event is being co-Chaired by Jerri Patchett, representing
the

and Marjorie Claborn, representing
the Fallbrook Art Association

Art Of The Book will debut on Sunday, October 23, 2005.
The location is behind the Art Center.
The hours are 11-4 and admission is free

Further information about the Festival, a fundraiser for the
Fallbrook Library, can be found at www.theartoffallbrook.com

Michael finished with an account of a meeting with Dixon Fish, representing the North County Printmakers Association
(headquartered in Fallbrook), to discuss the possibility
of a future Art Of The Print festival

[ Project Office  ]

Brigitte Schlemmer showed those present at the meeting a display of the designs submitted for the "Find Fallbrook" marketing campaign

The Team Leaders found many to be impressive, finally winnowing the selections down to two. Based on input that evening, Brigitte relayed she would approach the 2 artists to ask if they will fine-tune their designs
