[ The Art of Travel  ]

Vince Ross, Executive Director of the Fallbrook Tourism Project, opened the June meeting with mention of the Art Works of Fallbrook. He noted that with arts education being Fallbrook's guiding light, models were being looked at to shape the foundry as a teaching facility for present day, as well as future use

Vince detailed his planned trip, along with Jim Helms, to Oakland to visit The Crucible, a non-profit foundry teaching 100 classes, plus sporting its own festival. One goal of the trip is to learn their use of funding to expand to their present size

Following this journey, there will be a return visit with Mike Weber to Everett, Washington - and Seattle - in July to visit the Pratt Fine Arts Center, a facility of the City of Seattle. The goal will be to observe how the City runs the Pratt

Finally, Vince noted he was pleased to announce San Diego County
awarded an additional $10,000 this year in TOT funds (from $25,000 to $35,000) to promote tourism to the Village

[ Seeing The Big Picture  ]

Mike Weber, Chair of the Big Picture Committee,
mentioned the goal of creating a town center,
the boundaries running from the library to Main Street

Mike also expanded on the Fallbrook Gem & Mineral Society's new purchase - at the corner of Alvarado & Pico streets - noting that in addition to being home to a planned 2500 square foot central information center for visitors, the grounds will include a children's park. Also being considered is relocating the Chamber of Commerce offices to the property, with a 7-day-a-week visitor center open for the benefit of visitors to the Village. In addition, to enhance the experience of guests
of the Village, the property will include public restrooms

Team leaders in attendance at the meeting chimed-in
their hope for preserving the heritage pepper trees on the property

Mike reported the Vine Street property, a live/work space for artists
at the corner of Alvarado & Vine streets, received Design Review
and Planning Committee approval and that the drawings
have gone to the County

Mike ended by mentioning groundbreaking at both the Gem & Mineral and Vine Street properties could take place within 12 months

[ Heart Of The Village  ]

Budd & Pat Sutliff, representing the Fallbrook Merchants Association, reported the former establishment - Chubby Chix - is now being run
by Leilani's. Leilani's is also in Bonsall

They also mentioned a group within the Merchants Association is moving forward on sponsoring a fall event in town. This would add to the growing number of festivals being developed in the Village, including
Art Of The Flower - The Festival, that took place in April,
plus Art Of The Book - The Festival, scheduled for October

[ Chamber Of Commerce  ]

Wes Peet, representing the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce, related the recent printing of 10,000 Tourism Guides has been utilized so quickly, the Chamber is moving forward with a second printing of 5,000

Mary Perhacs, of the Art Center, as well as Budd & Pat Sutliff all reported seeing visitors in town carrying the Tourism Guides

Pat stated the need for a convenient-sized Fallbrook map,
possibly the size of the Tourism Guides, to pass out to visitors.
The current map is cumbersomely large

Finally, Wes reported the Boards of Directors for the Chamber and the Village Association (both sponsors of the Tourism Project), will be holding a joint meeting on June 30th at the Art Studios. The question arose if the meeting will be open to all, but this gathering will be strictly for elected Board members. The itinerary - discussion of coordinating efforts to promote tourism efforts in the Village - will be facilitated by Chamber past-President, and member of the Village Association Advisory Council, Don McDougal

[ Arts Council  ]

Mary Perhacs, representing the Arts Council,
reported that artist demonstrations are being planned to coincide
with
Art Center At Fallbrook events

In addition, Mary announced the Art Center's first "Cocktails & Culture" event - scheduled for 6:00-8:00, August 6th - designed to attract
a new age group to the Center - 21-35 year-olds.
The event, featuring catered sushi from Aqua Terra
and wine from Ponte Winery in the Temecula Valley
wine country, will coincide with the Art Center's
photography show - "My Fallbrook"

Mary is also working with Marie, and Myrtle Creek Nursery,
to landscape the exterior of the Art Center.
Art work for the wall facing Alvarado Street is being considered

Mary wrapped-up by reporting she is arranging
artist demonstrations for Hot Summer Nights

[ Art Of The Festivals  ]

Michael Cartwright, Art Of The Flower festival chair, gave a follow-up to Mary Perhacs' report on the Cocktails & Culture event at the Art Center in August, mentioning Supervisor Bill Horn's office will be represented that evening by Phil Rath and his wife,
plus Troy Funk and friends

Michael went on to report that groups within the Village
continue to move forward creating new Festivals.
One objective being discussed would be to have
Fallbrook known throughout the region for its
arts festivals, with at least 7 taking place throughout the
warm months of spring through autumn (April-October)

In addition to a new event being planned by the
Fallbrook Merchants Association, Michael announced
the
Friends of the Library have plans underway for their
1st annual book fair:
Art Of The Book - The Festival

Art Of The Book, a fundraiser for the Fallbrook Library, will offer for sale rare, collectible, and first edition books, plus contemporary art

The event will be held behind the Art Center and Friends of the Library groups throughout the county have been invited to participate by selling old and rare books they have collected. (Valley Center, Encinitas, Vista, & Rancho Santa Fe have indicated they will take part). Fallbrook Art Association artists will be displaying contemporary works and the Fallbrook Professional Writers Group is arranging a writers workshop

Vince Ross & Mike Weber offered a commitment to the re-paving of the location behind the Art Center, in time for Art Of The Book

[ Project Office  ]

Brigitte Schlemmer reported there had been a meeting with Pala Mesa to discuss placing tourist surveys in the rooms at the Resort,
the intent being to glean information
about current visitors' take on the Village and its offerings

She also mentioned the Tourism Project's solicitation
of Fallbrook logo designs and that 2 had been received

[Editor's note: Fallbrook's extensive art community is encouraged to submit logo designs for the theme "Find Fallbrook" to Project Office. Work can also be hand-delivered to the Art Studios Of Fallbrook, 310 E. Alvarado Street. The deadline is July 1st]

In conjunction with the visitor surveys and the logo design,
Brigitte related the overall marketing strategy
for Fallbrook continues to develop

Vince Ross agreed the Tourism Project
should move forward with branding and marketing

Pat Sutliff pointed out Wes Peet's statement that the
Chamber of Commerce is eager to move forward, as well.

Brigitte wrapped-up her presentation by discussing a 30-second
online commercial for Fallbrook she is working on

[ Everything Is Just Ducky ]

Before the Tourism Project team leaders adjourned for the evening,
all were reminded of the 4th of July Rubber Ducky race
beginning at 4:00 at the Grand Tradition. The event,
a family-oriented fundraiser for the Fallbrook Beautification Alliance,
will conclude with Fallbrook's 1st fireworks display
