Vince Ross kicked off the May meeting with an account of his recent trip to Everett, Washington to meet with tourism consultant, Lanie McMullin. Lanie took part in Destination Development Inc.'s original tourism assessment of Fallbrook. Among other responsibilities, she serves as the Executive Director of Economic Development & Human Services for the City of Everett

Lanie toured Vince through several Everett arts facilities,
with an eye to how their operations might apply
to art facilities in Fallbrook

Vince reported that more time needed to be spent in Everett and he will be returning there soon with Big Picture Committee chair, Mike Weber. Among their goals is to visit the Pratt Fine Arts Center, a facility of the City of Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation

Vince and Mike also plan to touch down in Oakland, California
to visit The Crucible, an arts education center
with possibilities for Fallbrook to emulate

[ Gateways  ]

Jerri Patchett, Gateways team leader, reported the South Mission Road widening project has received approval and funding from the County,
and that the budget has been confirmed

As a follow-up to last month's meeting with Motivational Systems, Inc., MSI has responded to the Tourism Project RFP
("Request For Proposal") and has submitted a proposal

MSI has the expertise to guide the entire gateways / signage / way-finding project from the design phase through the permitting processes. Jerri stated she will study their submission and report back to the team leaders

Jerri wrapped up by mentioning the 4th of July Rubber Ducky
race at the Grand Tradition. The event will be a family-oriented
fundraiser for the Fallbrook Beautification Alliance

[ Fallbrook Merchants  ]

Budd & Pat Sutliff, Fallbrook Merchants team leaders, reported that 30 of the local merchants had attended a presentation of the Village branding effort - "Find Fallbrook." As with this presentation to other community groups, the enthusiasm was high

Budd & Pat also related that attendance at the Village Merchants Association meetings continues to grow. At the most recent gathering, local shop keepers told of having very profitable days on the Sundays of the Art Of The Flower Festival and the Avocado Festival

[ Big Picture Committee  ]

Mike Weber, team leader of the Big Picture Committee,
reported that escrow has closed on the
Fallbrook Gem & Mineral Society's
lot at the corner of Alvarado Street and Pico Street,
across the street from the Art Center

Also, the Tourism Project is working closely with the Friends of the Library to coordinate use of the coming Events Center - the soon-to-be repaved, landscaped parking lot between the Library and the Arts Center. Mike remarked that he had discussed the matter with team leader, Jerri Patchett, President of the Friends of the Library

Finally, Mike stated the Vine Street project was approved by
Fallbrook Design Review, and that the permitting process has begun.
The venture, a combination of mixed use, live / work space
for visiting artists, will be a test of the new Village zoning

[ Marketing  ]

Don McDougal, Marketing team leader,
reported that Brigitte Schlemmer has made several presentations
of the "Find Fallbrook" Village branding and marketing
plan to community groups
and that the concept has been well received

The presentation consists of a 30-minute Power Point and story board display, and is available to any community group wishing to view it

Don further mentioned that the "Find Fallbrook" presentation
will soon be made to the Executive Committee
of the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce.
This will be followed by a presentation
to the Chamber Board of Directors

Once the Chamber Board has seen the presentation,
the Boards of the Village Association and the Chamber
will jointly endorse the marketing approach to the community

[Editor's Note: As mentioned on the home page of this newsletter,
the Fallbrook Tourism Project is a joint effort of the
Fallbrook Village Association
and the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce.
Chamber Past President, Wes Peet,
serves as a Tourism Project team leader,
representing the Chamber. Also,
several Board members of both the Village Association
and the Chamber are Tourism Project team leaders]

[ Art Of The Flower Festival ]

Michael Cartwright, new Chair of the Festival,
(following the remarkable accomplishments
of Festival 2005 Chair, Marlene Rantanen)
reported that the Festival was such a success,
the Committee has already set the date for
the 2006 Festival - Sunday, April 2, 2006

The Committee has also put online a Festival website.
It can be visited at:

Michael further reported that a whole-hearted effort will be made next year to attract Festival visitors to the Art Studios, including glass blowers at the Art Studios, food booths between the Art Center and the Art Studios, musicians at the Art Studios, and horse carriage rides between Main Street and the Art Studios

Don McDougal observed that Art Of The Flower
was a Village test subject, to serve as a model
for future events to attract upscale visitors to Fallbrook

Pat Sutliff pointed out that the event exposed many new visitors
to the Heart of the Village shopping district

Vince Ross mentioned the importance of future events
to benefit Fallbrook businesses
