PROGRESS REPORT:

Update From The Front

[ Tourism Development Team Leaders Meet]

In mid-November,

team leaders of the implementation phase of the Fallbrook Tourism Study met at the Art Studios to discuss progress on the projects. Those attending included:

  • Vince Ross - Executive Director

  • Don McDougal - Marketing Committee

  • Mike Weber - Big Picture Committee

  • Wes Peet - Chamber of Commerce

  • Budd & Pat Sutliff - Village Merchants

  • Jerri Patchett - Fallbrook Beautification Alliance

  • Michael Cartwright - Tourism Newsletter

  • Brigitte Schlemmer - Project Office

The meeting began - and ended - with Big Picture Committee chairman, Mike Weber, stressing the need for the development of tourism in Fallbrook to be inclusive. Mike drove home the point that all people and businesses in the Village should be encouraged to contribute their views.

The following undertakings were reported by committee leaders:

[ Marketing Committee ]

  • Don McDougal, committee Chair, reported that the Marketing Committee has winnowed down its immediate goals to branding, marketing, and website development.

  • Branding is the Committee's immediate goal, developing an identity for Fallbrook which will be used by all civic groups in the marketing of the Village to visitors. The goal is to present a consistent and positive image of Fallbrook.

  • To this end, the Committee is currently brainstorming slogans representative of the Village, and will then turn their attention toward logos.

    • (If you have a suggested slogan representative of Fallbrook, please click the e-mail link and send your idea. Any and all input is encouraged)

  • Once these two milestones have been achieved, the information will be turned over to the other committees for use on the Art Center banners, Main Street banners, gateway signs, Art Of The Flower Festival literature, etc.

[ Chamber of Commerce ]

  • Wes Peet, Chamber President, reported the Chamber is looking into upgrading the Avocado Festival, adding artisans specializing in creating quality work, in keeping with the theme of arts education in Fallbrook. The Art Center, too, will be participating in this effort.

  • The Chamber is also looking into establishing information kiosks throughout the Village, to provide visitors with maps and information relating to "What To Do In Fallbrook."

|[ Village Center Committee ]|

  • Budd & Pat Sutliff, committee co-Chairs, reported that an enthusiastic first meeting was conducted with 7 merchants participating.

  • The Committee is brainstorming a name for the commercial district, to be used when marketing Fallbrook businesses. Names under consideration include "Village Center," "Old Town," and "The Commons."

  • Plans are underway to install quaint, attractive signs in front of the shops in the downtown area. The Committee will guide this effort so that all signage contributes to the attractiveness of the Village.

  • The Committee is also working toward replacing the current street lights with fixtures reminiscent of the original historic lights.

    • It was reported that Supervisor Bill Horn's office is prepared to assist with funding for the street lights.

[ Beautification & Gateways Committee]

Jerri Patchett, Chair of the Fallbrook Beautification Alliance, reported that gateway signs, designed by Dixon Fish, will be placed at the entrances to Fallbrook.

The branding design from the Marketing Committee will guide the design of the signs.

A Request For Proposal is being developed to present to sign companies interested in participating.

Progress is being made on the redesign of the S. Mission Road triangle entrance to Fallbrook, across from Del Rey Avocado. It was related that an avocado sculpture is planned for the site.

Plans are also afoot to replace the avocado billboard at the intersection of E. Mission Road & Stagecoach Lane.

Too, it was reported that someone with expertise in dealing with trash will be invited to join the Beautification Alliance, so as to contribute to keeping Fallbrook cleaner.

[ Big Picture Committee ]

The Big Picture Committee consists of:

  • Mike Weber

  • Vince Ross

  • Don McDougal

  • Sid Syvertson

  • Jennifer Jeffries

Mike Weber reported that the Committee is overseeing suggested ideas for the revival of the downtown core area - Main Street, from East Mission Road to Fallbrook Street.

One project discussed was the Gem & Mineral Museum's pending purchase of the vacant lot next door to their location at the corner of Alvarado and Pico Streets, 1 block west of Main Street. Being considered for the property is a park for the benefit of Fallbrook children, plus a relocated Chamber of Commerce office, public restrooms and a visitor information kiosk.

It was further discussed that across the street from the park, behind the Art Center, there are plans for the parking lot to be upgraded to serve as a venue for special events, as well as parking.

It was also reported that the owners of what will be billed as The Citrus Plaza - the former packing plant at the corner of S. Mission Road and Beech Street - are planning to break ground in spring 2005, with refurbishments including shops and a restaurant.
